Planned Parenthood Toronto strongly believes in community health promotion, helping the people of Toronto to gain the skills and information they need to make informed choices about their sexual and reproductive health. Through workshops ranging from birth control options to breaking down barriers to healthcare for young men, we help to expand the knowledge of youth and women in Toronto. Our workshops are offered everywhere from schools to shelters to other community agencies. Our advertising campaigns are instantly recognizable and are used to raise awareness of sexual health issues, like STI testing. Hugely successful, they help to further our mission to promote healthy choices throughout the city.
Through our Youth HIV/AIDS Project, Planned Parenthood Toronto is thrilled to have successfully established its first HIV/AIDS program, specifically engaging self-identified HIV-positive youth. The goal of the Project is to increase the knowledge of HIV-positive youth about sexual health and increase their facilitation and leadership skills so that they in turn can educate their peers about HIV and STI prevention. HIV-positive youth are engaged as volunteers through a Youth Advisory Committee in the planning, implementation and evaluation of the work and led the creation of a Positive Youth Manifesto which was launched in spring 2010. To see a copy of the manifesto, please click here. Funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada to continue the project for 2010-2012 has been grants, and Planned Parenthood Toronto is very much looking forward to building on the work accomplished thus far.
The Youth HIV/AIDS Project is currently seeking HIV-positive youth (up to age 29) interested in volunteering. Training starts October 4, 2011. Please contact Rae at rwatts@ppt.on.ca or (416) 961-0113 x 162 for more information.
